George Brown, Class Clown 11 – Eww! What’s on My Shoe?

byNancy Krulik

Nancy Krulik's eleventh George Brown, Class Clown book is a gloriously gross school story for 6 year olds about chewed gum, picture day and a burp with a mind of its own.

What happens

It's called Eww! What's on My Shoe? That tells you most of what you need to know.

George used to be the class clown. When his family moved to Beaver Brook, he promised himself he'd behave. Then a wish on a shooting star only half came true, and George got a magic super burp. When it escapes, his arms and legs do whatever the burp fancies.

This time his best mate Alex is close to a world record. He's been collecting other people's already chewed gum (from bus stops, door handles and places you'd rather not think about) and squashing it into one enormous ball. Someone from the Schminess Book of World Records is coming to measure it.

George is really happy for Alex. He's also a tiny bit jealous. Picture day is coming and he wants to be remembered for something too. So he tries being a jock in his dad's huge varsity jacket. Then a rock star in sunglasses, which is how he ends up eating clam chowder he thought was ice cream.

The burp turns up at the arcade too. George slides down a Skee-Ball lane on his bottom and dives headfirst into the ball pit with a crowd of crying toddlers. Who needs a villain when you've got a burp like that?

It's gross in exactly the way plenty of children find hilarious. Spit, gum stuck in hair, and Alex's mum (a dentist) flossing broccoli out of her teeth in front of everyone. If your reader squeals "EWW!" and then asks for more, this one's for them.

Underneath the silliness there's a kind little story about being pleased for a friend when part of you wishes it were you. George catches himself feeling jealous and doesn't like it one bit. That's a feeling lots of children will know.

What to read next

If this one goes down well, Trouble Magnet is an earlier George Brown book. It opens with Mrs Kelly teaching the class to hula, and George trying very hard not to laugh, or burp.
