The Secrets of Droon Special Edition 3 – Voyagers of the Silver Sand

Tony Abbott's Voyagers of the Silver Sand is a race-against-the-clock Droon adventure for 7 year olds in which the way home disappears.

What happens

Eric, Julie and Neal found the magical world of Droon down a rainbow staircase in Eric's basement. They've had loads of adventures there with Princess Keeah and Max the spider troll. But this time the evil Emperor Ko puts a curse on the staircase. It sizzles, it fizzles, and it vanishes. The children are stuck in Droon, while a dragon called Gethwing has escaped up into their own town.

Then Eric has a vision of his street with nothing left in it. Yikes!

The only way to bring the stairs back is to find five treasures stolen from the Tower of Memory. And they're hidden in the past. The friends have to ride flying pilkas into a desert land that is five hundred years long (yes, really) and collect every treasure before midnight. A talking feather pen called Quill comes along to write it all down.

It's non-stop from the very first word. BLAM! There are exploding fireballs, beasts with blazing red eyes, flaming wingsnakes and a shadowless phantom called Saba who can follow them through time. There's always something new around the corner.

The friends are good fun together too. Eric can shoot sparks from his fingers and see the future. Julie can fly and change shape. Neal is still waiting for any powers at all (poor Neal!), and he's always the first to announce he's about to freak out.

This one sits deep into the series and mentions lots of earlier adventures. It catches you up nicely, but a reader who already knows the gang will get the most out of it.

For a reader who loves magic with a ticking clock, this is a great pick.
