It picks up the morning after the Valentine's dance. Nikki is still wearing her tiara when a famous TV producer rings with the chance of a record deal for her band. There's one catch. He can only meet her that night, backstage at a sold-out concert.
Of course it all goes wrong. Nikki's arch-enemy MacKenzie pinches their backstage passes, so Nikki and her best friends Chloe and Zoey sneak in by diving into a rack of stage costumes. Cue makeovers, stiletto heels they can't walk in and a grumpy security guard who wants the lot of them arrested!
And that's just the start. Before the week is out, a camera crew is lined up to follow Nikki everywhere for a reality show. School, band practice, the recording studio... and home? That's a problem, because Nikki has a secret she'd REALLY rather the whole school didn't see on the telly.
Anyone who's read a Dork Diaries book will know exactly what to expect. Nikki writes in capitals when she's excited (which is most of the time) and squeals SQUEEE at good news. She imagines the worst possible outcome of everything. At one point she's sure she'll be sharing a prison cell with MacKenzie, which she decides would be worse than anything a judge could give her.
She also keeps having to stop mid-story because her mum wants her or her little sister Brianna barges in. It's literally like reading someone's real diary, and the cliffhangers at the end of each day's entry keep you turning the pages.
There's plenty of crush chat about Brandon (does he like her back?) and a lot of MacKenzie being mean. It's silly and dramatic and very funny. If your reader enjoys big feelings, bigger disasters and a best-friend trio who stick together no matter what, they'll love this.
It's worth knowing this isn't the start of Nikki's story, so if it's your reader's first Dork Diaries, you might want to go back to Tales from a not so fabulous life. That's the diary Nikki begins on her first days at a posh new private school, desperate to fit in with the popular crowd.
