Benjamin Bird's Bubble Trouble is a super hero team-up for 6 year olds about Superman, Aquaman and a sky full of giant bubbles.
Clark Kent is sitting at his desk at the Daily Planet, waiting for a story to pop into his head. Then something outside goes POP! POP! POP! Off come the glasses and the tie, and Superman is on his way.
Over the bay, huge bubbles are floating up towards Metropolis. Each one is full of seawater, with whales, sharks and lobsters trapped inside! Black Manta is standing on a bubble machine out at sea, laughing a robot laugh. His plan? What goes up must come down, and he'd like the city flooded.
Superman is about to punch a bubble when Aquaman splashes up and stops him. That super strength could hurt the animals inside. So they team up. Superman blows the bubbles back down with his super breath, and Aquaman pops each one gently with his trident, so the sea creatures drop safely back into the water.
The nicest thing about it is that the day is saved by listening. Superman is the strongest hero around, but he stops the second his friend points out a problem. The plan they come up with together is kinder AND cleverer.
It's a very short read. Three quick chapters, big sound effects in capitals (FWOOOOSH!) and groan-along jokes about bursting bubbles. There's even a little glossary at the back for words like trident and boulder.
That makes it a brilliant one for a newly independent reader who loves heroes but isn't ready for a long book yet. They'll feel very grown up finishing it on their own! (Superman's freeze breath goes down very well too.)
