The Darkest Hour is the sixth Warriors book by Erin Hunter, an adventure for 10 year olds where the four Clans of forest cats finally run out of road.

Against that sits a warning from StarClan. Four Clans will become two. A lion and a tiger will fight, and after that the forest belongs to blood. Fireheart has to work out what any of it means before it happens to him.
Reading these is like reading a war story where everyone has fur. The cats have ranks and codes and a religion of their own. Territory gets argued over inch by inch, and betrayals carry across books. Erin Hunter takes every bit of it seriously, which is exactly why children who fall for these books stay in them for years.

A proper word on content, because this series earns one. Cats die on the page, in battle and out of it. A gentle queen is killed deliberately so that a dog pack will get a taste for cat blood, and that is in the opening chapter. Wounds are described. If your reader is happy with animals in real danger, they'll be gripped from the first page. If they were wrecked by Watership Down, this is a bigger ask than it looks.
