It's really a book for you as much as your child. Russell was a teacher, and he opens with a long essay for grown-ups on why reading aloud matters so much. You can happily skip straight to the stories (he won't mind).
The pieces are grouped by listening level, starting with ones for ages five and up. The simpler stories come first and the harder ones later. Most come with a short note about the story, a rough reading time and a little guide to tricky words, with how to say them. Muslin is "MUZZ-lin", for example.
That makes it super easy to pick up at bedtime. You know it'll take ten minutes. You know which words to practise first.
The opening stories are ones you'll probably half remember. The Brave Tin Soldier, standing on his one leg and falling in love with a paper dancer. The Emperor's New Clothes, with the swindlers weaving nothing and everyone too scared to say so. Then Aladdin, which takes a good twenty minutes and is full of genies, jewels and a wicked magician pretending to be his uncle.
In between there are short poems, like Wordsworth's kitten chasing falling leaves and Blake's The Lamb. Further on there are Shakespeare's sonnets, and pieces from Helen Keller, plus a speech by Martin Luther King Jr.
The old-fashioned language is part of the charm. It sounds grand and a bit formal, and it's wonderful read out loud.
A few things to know before you start. These are the classic tellings, and they aren't softened. The tin soldier's story doesn't end happily. In Aladdin the magician knocks the boy down and plans to kill him once he has the lamp. The note before Aladdin also explains the frame story plainly, including a king who kills a new bride every night. Some of the wording is dated too.
A sensitive listener might need a cuddle after the tin soldier. Most children love these stories precisely because they feel real and a bit dangerous.
