Paula Harrison's Kitty and the Sky Garden Adventure is a cosy superhero story for 7 year olds about a hidden garden high up on a city roof.
Kitty has catlike superpowers. When the moon comes out she can see in the dark, hear tiny sounds from far away and leap from roof to roof. Best of all, she can talk to cats.
Right now she's busy with something more ordinary. Her class is having a competition to design a new school garden, and she's growing a sunflower for it. She just can't think what else to draw.
So when her fluffy white friend Pixie tells her about an amazing garden hidden on top of a building across the city, off they go. There's a winding path of stepping-stones, sunflowers taller than Kitty and a wind chime made of seashells whose music seems almost magic.
There's also a grumpy old tortoiseshell cat called Diggory, who guards it. And a catnip bush, which sends Pixie and the kitten Pumpkin rolling about with their paws in the air (oops!).
Diggory softens, and he says they can come back. But Pixie can't keep a secret. The next night the garden is packed with badly behaved cats trampling the flowers. Then the precious wind chime goes missing.
It's such a sweet little story. Pixie is chatty and VERY excitable. Pumpkin is nervous and adorable. And Kitty is kind and brave, and always tries to do the right thing. Do you think she can put things right before morning?
There's a nice gentle message tucked in too, about sharing special places and looking after them. Kitty even turns old paint tins and a pair of red wellies into flowerpots!
It's a quick read, with six short chapters and some fun facts about cats' super senses at the end. If you've got a reader who's just starting out on chapter books, it's a lovely one to share.
