Kat Reads

Brenda Ponnay's Kat Reads is a tiny first book for 5 year olds about a girl who reads absolutely everything.

What happens

And I do mean everything. Kat reads books, of course. But she also reads boxes and signs. Labels. Menus. Texts!

That's the whole story, just seven short sentences, each one starting with Kat. It's over in a minute. But there's a lovely little idea in it.

Have you noticed how children who've just started reading suddenly want to read every word they see? The cereal box at breakfast, the signs on the way to school, the menu when you're out for tea (all of it, out loud).

That's Kat. And the last line, where she reads everything, will make any keen word-spotter grin.

There are a few ideas at the end too, like finishing the sentence "Kat reads..." with something of their own, or drawing what she might read next.

If your reader is at the stage of spotting words everywhere they go, this is a sweet one to share. Their own list will probably be longer than Kat's!
