Tony Ross's I Want My Dinner is a cheeky Little Princess picture book for 5 year olds about the word she keeps forgetting.
It starts with a very loud demand for dinner. "Say PLEASE," says the Queen.
So she does, eventually. Then she wants her potty. Then her teddy. And every time, somebody in the palace reminds her how to ask nicely.
It's very short and very repetitive, which is exactly why it works. Your reader will be shouting PLEASE along with the grown-ups (probably louder than them).
Then it flips. Out on a walk, the Little Princess meets the Beastie, and the Beastie wants HIS dinner. Guess who's telling him to say please now?
The very last line has a little joke about the other magic word, too.
Books about manners can feel a bit preachy. This one doesn't, because it's the Little Princess doing the demanding and she's so funny with it. If you've got a small person at home who says "I want" a LOT, you'll probably recognise a few of these!
