Maddy Mara's Azmina the Gold Glitter Dragon is a magical adventure for 6 year olds about a new girl who finds out she can turn into a dragon.
Azmina has just moved from the city with her mum. She sits at a table at school with two girls called Willa and Naomi, and she can feel they're meant to be friends. She just doesn't know how to make it happen yet.
Then she hears singing from the forest behind her new back garden. She grabs a golden leaf, sings the words back and whoosh! She's in the Magic Forest, where a peach-looking fruit tastes of chocolate and her sneeze comes out in golden sparkles.
When she looks into a lake, a dragon looks back. She trips over something she thinks is a snake. It's her own tail!
It turns out Willa and Naomi can do it too (one's silver and one's rainbow). The Tree Queen needs all three of them, because the Shadow Sprites are stealing the forest's sunshine. The girls have to gather three ingredients for a potion before the sun goes out completely.
It's very easy to love Azmina. She's chatty and brave, she hiccups little flames, and her mum says she trips over things that aren't even there. There's a talking cub with butterfly wings called Buttercub who turns up whenever she needs him. There are grumpy glow bees who hate bee jokes and have an elected president instead of a queen.
Under the glitter it's really a story about friendship. Azmina worries she won't fit in with two girls who already know each other. When the three of them disagree about the last ingredient, she has to decide whether to trust herself or stick with the group. The Shadow Sprites and a live volcano bring a bit of danger, but nothing too scary for this age.
If you've got a reader who loves dragons, sparkles and flying, this is pure fun. It's also a nice one for a child who's just started somewhere new and is still waiting to find their people.
