Eugene and his best friend Charlie are ordinary kids at Sunnyview Elementary. Secretly they're Captain Awesome and Nacho Cheese Man, and Halloween is their busiest night. Every scarecrow could be a villain!
Then they find a creepy old house at the end of Sally's street. Broken windows. A door hanging open. Nobody has lived there for ages. Eugene gets a tingle. Then he remembers some homework he needs to do (maybe tomorrow night's too).
That night he has a nightmare about the place. At school the next day a classmate tells everyone about a headless ghost who lives there. So of course the boys decide they HAVE to go back. On Halloween night. In the dark.
It's super daft and very funny. There are big sound words everywhere (CREAK! SLAM! MEOW!). Charlie squirts canned cheese at every problem, including his own face. Eugene's dad does the trick-or-treat walk dressed as Elvis and confiscates every sweet with coconut in it, for the boys' own safety of course.
The best bit is how honest it is about being scared. Eugene admits superheroes get frightened too. They just go in anyway. That's a lovely message for a little one who's a bit wary of the dark. And the spookiness is always the silly kind.
The Sunnyview Superhero Squad has a few adventures in the library, and this is the eighth in the series. You don't need the others first, though a mystery helper who appeared in an earlier book pops up again here.
