There’s nothing quite like getting stuck into a great series, whatever your age.

And when you’ve got a 7 year old who loves to read, having a decent series to hand is very helpful!

We have book one of all five of these book series for 7 year olds. Atticus Claw, Harper, There’s a Dragon in my Dinner!, The Nothing to See Here Hotel and Fenway and Hattie.

They all come from our books for 7 year olds shelf, and every one has at least two more books behind the first.

Why these five book series for 7 year olds

I wanted a mix, so no two of them are alike. You get a cat burglar, a flying umbrella, a dragon small enough to post, a hotel for trolls and a dog who thinks he’s in charge.

If it’s single books you want, those are on my chapter books for 7 year olds list. This page is only for series.

Five book series for 7 year olds

Atticus Claw Breaks the Law by Jennifer Gray

Atticus Claw Breaks the Law

Jennifer GrayAge 7Animals

A cat burglar who gets paid in sardines.

Atticus Grammaticus Cattypuss Claw is lounging on a comfy bed in Monte Carlo when a terrified pigeon turns up with a message. Somebody wants to meet him in Littleton-on-Sea. That somebody is Jimmy Magpie and his gang, who want the houses of the town burgled and are paying six sardines a job. Atticus moves in with Michael and Callie Cheddar, whose dad is the new police inspector and can’t stand cats.

We have six of these books. Atticus Claw Settles a Score is the second. A magpie called Beaky is flattened by a car early on and the others hold a very solemn funeral for him, which is funnier than it sounds, I promise!

Harper and the Scarlet Umbrella by Cerrie Burnell

Harper 01 – Harper and the Scarlet Umbrella

Cerrie BurnellAge 7Magic

Harper lives on the fourteenth floor of the Tall Apartment Block in the City of Clouds. When her yellow umbrella is ruined, she’s finally allowed to open the birdcage in the bathroom, where an old red one has always been locked away. It can fly. Then her cat Midnight doesn’t come home, and neither do the other cats in the building. There’s strange music coming from the basement at midnight.

All five Harper books are here, and Harper and the Circus of Dreams comes next. Harper plays the cello, the viola and a piccolo flute. The villain is a very tall man with hair the colour of magpie feathers, and there’s a tense moment when he grabs one of her friends.

There’s a Dragon in my Dinner! by Tom Nicoll

There’s a Dragon in my Dinner!

Tom NicollAge 7Funny

The silliest of the five, and the only one with a fire-breathing burp.

Eric opens a box of free beansprouts from the takeaway and finds a tiny green dragon, which he takes for a toy. A little while later the toy is sitting on the end of his bed reading his comics. His name is Pan, he’s a Mini-Dragon, and his parents were trying to post him to Mexico. Eric’s own parents have a rule. Three strikes before his ninth birthday and there’s no Thunderbolt scooter. Pan eating his school uniform out of the laundry basket doesn’t help.

We’ve got four of these books. There’s a Dragon in my Backpack! is next, when Pan talks Eric into taking him to school. Eric is nearly nine and tells the whole thing himself.

The Nothing to See Here Hotel by Steven Butler

The Nothing to See Here Hotel

Steven ButlerAge 7Friendship

By a long way the grossest book on this page.

Frankie Banister’s family run a secret hotel on Brighton seafront where every guest is magical. Human eyes can’t see most of it, and his dad writes terrible online reviews of his own hotel to keep people away. The cook is a giant spider in a flowery apron and fluffy slippers. Then a goblin arrives out of a storm on the back of a raven with a message, and that means a very demanding guest is on his way.

We have three of these books. You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yeti! picks up where the first one finishes. Frankie’s granny is a troll who eats a whole cockroach quiche with the plate, and she’s horrible to him all the way through. It’s meant to be funny, and some children don’t enjoy a nasty grown-up even then.

Fenway and Hattie by Victoria J. Coe

Fenway and Hattie

Victoria J. CoeAge 7Animals

Told by a Jack Russell who has got everything wrong.

Fenway lives in a city flat with Hattie, Food Lady and Fetch Man. One day all their things go into boxes and some Large Strangers carry everything away, so Fenway barks at the burglars until his bark wears out. The family are moving house. The new place has a garden he decides is a Dog Park, some squirrels he decides are evil, and a kitchen floor so slippery he names it the Wicked Floor.

Four books with Fenway and Hattie and the Evil Bunny Gang next. There’s a second set of three as well, called Make Way for Fenway! Hattie is sad about leaving her old home and hugs her one-armed teddy when she’s scared, so there’s a bit of feeling under the jokes.

What about Magic Tree House?

It’s the series most people name first for a 7 year old, and we have more than fifty of them.

Our shelf starts at the very beginning with Dinosaurs Before Dark. Jack opens a book in a tree house, wishes he could see a Pteranodon for real, and there’s one gliding outside the window. The Knight at Dawn picks up the very next morning.

For a child who has read the lot, I’ve put what comes after on my books like Magic Tree House list.

Three more series if those are done

My Father’s Dragon is three short books and we have all three. Elmer Elevator sets off to rescue a baby dragon that the animals of Wild Island have roped by the neck and put to work. He packs chewing gum, two dozen pink lollipops and six magnifying glasses.

Catalina Incognito is four books. Catalina arranges her books by colour and her clothes in alphabetical order. Her great-aunt gives her a magic sewing kit, and a grey hoodie with kitten ears turns out to be a disguise.

Kell, the Alien is four as well. Kell’s family crash-landed on Earth when his dad spilled space-coffee on the controls. Now he’s in his first week at an Earth school, and the head teacher chases UFOs.

If 7 isn’t quite the right shelf

A year older and the books get longer. Those are on my book series for 8 year olds list.

And if Izzy and her friends are already a favourite, best Pamela Butchart books goes through that whole series.

Just so you know…

All of these series are in Little Reads, a children’s library app with 3,000+ hand-picked books. It’s £7.99 a month after a 7-day free trial. Cancel anytime. There are 100+ free books on a free account as well.
