Rapunzel

byDisney Books

Rapunzel is the old fairy tale of the girl in the tower, retold for 5 year olds as a short, gentle story to read aloud in one go.

What happens

It all starts with lettuce. A wife who's about to have a baby can't stop thinking about the rapunzel growing next door. But that garden belongs to a witch.

Her husband climbs the wall one night and gets caught. The price for the lettuce is the baby (and he's sure she can't mean it).

She does. Rapunzel grows up with long golden hair, and the witch locks her in a tower with no door. The only way in is up her braid!

Then a prince rides past and hears her singing. Your reader will probably be saying "let down your hair" along with him by the second time round.

The scary bit is quick. The witch cuts off the braid and shoves the prince out of the window, and Rapunzel tumbles out after him. They both land in the bushes, a relief for any little worrier.

What to read next

If they enjoy a fairy tale told the traditional way, try Jerry Pinkney's Little Red Riding Hood next. There's a mother's warning, a walk through the snow and a sly wolf (who really does gobble up Grandmama in this one).
