Georgia Pritchett’s Wilf the Mighty Worrier Battles a Pirate is a gloriously daft seaside adventure for 8 year olds about a small boy who ends up walking the plank.<\/p>\n
Wilf is scared of gnomes, nutcrackers, bats, squid, fish sucking his toes and snowmen eating him. So a pirate adventure is really not his idea of fun.<\/p>\n
It all starts with a family tree. Wilf’s is full of worriers (one ancestor invented the brakes, because somebody had to). Alan, the evil lunatic who lives next door, looks up his own and discovers he’s descended from Long John Alan, the fiercest pirate on the seas.<\/p>\n
So now Alan wants to be a pirate too. He orders a pirate ship online, plus a parrot called Nigel and an eyepatch. Then he nicks Wilf’s baby sister’s bucket and spade at the beach. Wilf and Dot creep aboard to get it back, and before they know it they’re stowaways heading out to sea.<\/p>\n
The jokes come thick and fast. Nigel the parrot is hard of hearing and gets every order wrong (“Hire the salmons?”). Alan’s pirates would rather do karaoke and fold napkins into swans. Alan lands on the Isle of Wight and insists it’s an undiscovered island called the United States of Alan. And the narrator keeps begging you to put the book down!<\/p>\n
Could there be a better hero for a worrier? Wilf has a leaflet called How to Stop Worrying, and he tries the tips one by one. Dancing to distract himself (mortifying). Breaking the scary thing into little steps (which just gets him to the squid faster). He’s still scared, but he does the brave thing anyway, knees wobbling.<\/p>\n
There’s a sweet side, too. Wilf’s best friend is Stuart, a woodlouse, and their secret handshake is done fourteen times, once for each leg.<\/p>\n
A tiny heads-up. There’s some very mild swearing (“damn” and “dash it all to hell”) from a grumpy old submarine captain, and Alan orders his crew to “unleash hell”. It’s all in fun, but you might hear it read back to you!<\/p>\n
If this is your reader’s first Wilf book, they might like to go back to Wilf the Mighty Worrier Saves the World, where Alan first moves in next door with his sulky robot and his right-hand man (who’s a dog).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
