R F Kristi’s Vampires at Easter is a spooky but cosy mystery for 7 year olds, narrated by a cat who runs her own detective agency.<\/p>\n
Inca is a Siberian kitty, the eldest of the family and (in her own opinion) the cleverest creature for several thousand miles. Her troupe is her prim Siamese sister Cara, her tabby brother Fromage, who is named after cheese and is usually to blame when something breaks, and Charlotte, a dwarf hamster with rather more sense than Fromage.<\/p>\n
Their humanoid, as Inca calls her, runs a cheese shop in Kensington. Inca eavesdrops on all her phone calls, which is how she hears first that they’re off to Transylvania for Easter.<\/p>\n
It’s all told as Inca’s diary, counting down. Fourteen days before Easter. Thirteen. It gives the trip a lovely fizz of anticipation.<\/p>\n
Mum is catering a monster-themed birthday party at Bran Castle, and it’s only when the kitties ask a well-travelled dog detective about the place that anybody mentions Dracula. Cara wants to know at once whether he’ll suck the blood out of Mum. Fromage puffs out his chest and promises to deal personally with any vampire who shows his face.<\/p>\n
What they actually find, creeping into the castle kitchen at night, is an enormous calico cat called Katski helping herself to the cheese. She isn’t eating most of it. She’s carrying it up a winding stair to a tower, where a pale boy in a black cape is waiting. His name is Dracco, he has two small fangs, and his face lights up when he sees her.<\/p>\n
Dracco can’t go out in daylight any more. He can’t look in a mirror. He turns twelve on Easter Sunday, and Katski can’t stop what happens then by herself.<\/p>\n
So it isn’t the cat detectives against a monster. It’s a troupe of pets trying to help a lonely boy, which is a much kinder shape for this age.<\/p>\n
Do be ready for the spooky bits. The garden is a graveyard, they all climb into a coffin to hear a story, wolves howl in the dark, and Dracco’s parents died when he was a baby. None of it is nasty, but a seven-year-old who lies awake after a ghost story might want this one read in daylight.<\/p>\n
