Joanna Nadin’s The Worst Class in the World is a very silly school story for 8 year olds about class 4B, who never mean to cause chaos but always do.<\/p>\n
There are two stories in here, and both start the same way. Everyone in 4B is blaming everyone else, and Mr Nidgett is threatening to quit teaching and become a llama farmer.<\/p>\n
Stanley tells it. His best friend Manjit is trying to become the First Human Boy to do all sorts of things (eat ten bananas in ten seconds, dangle off a door for an hour, spontaneously combust). Manjit always has a FOOLPROOF PLAN. It never is.<\/p>\n
In the first story the whole class tries to become Biscuit King of 4B. Stanley and Manjit bake Manley Biscuits with Mr Morris’s cough syrup and aubergine chutney standing in for maple syrup and jam. Lionel bakes cheesy seedy ones to save the whales. Bruce hides chewing gum in his. Everyone sets up stalls behind the Smelly Death Log, but nobody has ten pence to buy anything. Then the headmistress spots them from her window, and there’s only one way to hide the biscuits. You can probably guess how that turns out!<\/p>\n
The second story is Show and Tell, with a mystery prize for beating the swots in 4A. It involves a rat called Fingers, Manjit’s dog Killer and Mr Nidgett’s Emergency Shoes (they don’t survive).<\/p>\n
It’s a brilliant read-aloud. The jokes come round again and again, which younger readers LOVE. Everything is LITERALLY happening. Arguments go “Is not.” “Is too.” for a whole timed minute. And Mrs Bottomley-Blunt’s laminated List of Rules keeps growing (number 31 is No claiming sago pudding is frogspawn).<\/p>\n
Home is just as funny. Grandpa tells Stanley that IN HIS DAY they ate salty cardboard and were glad of it. Mum has spent all day listening to Mr Butterworth at work, and just wants Stanley to be happy. And he is.<\/p>\n
If you’ve got a child who’s ever come home with a story about who started it, they’ll recognise 4B straight away. Honestly, who hasn’t been part of a class like this one? It’s all good-hearted. Nobody is really in trouble for long, and even the rules end up as a joke.<\/p>\n
If they finish it wanting more of the same class, The Worst Class in the World Gets Worse carries on with Stanley, Manjit, the laminated rules and a fresh round of blaming each other.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
