Bryony May has just moved to Plum Cottage in the seaside town of Brook Dale with her mum, her twin brother Josh and a grumpy cat called Blueberry Muffin. Her dad died six months ago. They’ve come for a fresh start and to be closer to Grandpa.<\/p>\n
Bryony misses her best friends and her old riding school terribly. Then, exploring the beech wood in a storm, she hears a pony whinnying. He’s rearing and terrified, and the girl with him is too scared to go near. Bryony talks him down, slowly and softly, until he sniffs her hand.<\/p>\n
He has a little white star between his eyes. Her dad used to call her his little star. Is it a sign?<\/p>\n
When Bryony finally tracks the pony down, he’s not with the kind girl she met in the wood. He belongs to Georgina Brook, who lives in a manor with peacocks on the lawn and thinks her new pony is “useless”. She keeps him shut in his stable on a hot day. He doesn’t even have a name!<\/p>\n
Georgina is a proper frosty villain for this shelf (the blueberry muffins Bryony baked for her end up all over the floor, and Bryony isn’t sure how). You’ll be desperate for somebody to give that pony a cuddle.<\/p>\n
The seaside town is lovely too. There’s a wonky old shop run by Miss Pigeon, who claims to be a part-time fortune-teller, plus rock pools, caves and a new riding stable up on the cliffs.<\/p>\n
Grief runs gently all the way through. Bryony cries over a photo of her dad in the first chapter, and her mum can barely talk about him. It’s never heavy, and there are lots of funny moments with Josh (who pelts her with flour). A child who’s lost someone might find it comforting, or it might be a bit close to home. You’ll know best.<\/p>\n
Any pony-mad reader who dreams of a horse that picks THEM will fall for this one.<\/p>\n
