R. L. Stine’s Liar Liar is a creepy Nightmare Room story for 11 year olds about a boy who fibs his way through every day until he meets someone wearing his face.<\/p>\n
Ross Arthur is twelve and lives in Beverly Hills, where his dad is one of the bosses at a film studio. Ross tells lies the way other people breathe. A tennis coach who sprained his wrist on a can of balls. A sick dog (the Arthurs don’t have a dog). A printer that blew up and poured out smoke like a toaster.<\/p>\n
Then he picks up an Oscar in a producer’s office, drops it, and the head snaps clean off. He shoves both pieces under the couch and swears he never saw it. The deal falls through and he’s grounded.<\/p>\n
So of course he sneaks out to a pool party anyway. He’s invited two different girls, which goes about as well as you’d guess.<\/p>\n
It’s while he’s swimming underwater that he sees him. A boy with his hair, his eyes and his crooked smile, swimming straight at him and mouthing two words. Go away.<\/p>\n
Nobody believes Ross, and why would they? He’s the boy who cried wolf, and now there really is a wolf. That’s what makes it so clever. The one time he’s telling the truth, he’s used up all his chances.<\/p>\n
Ross tells the story himself, and he’s very good company. He owns up to lying to you, too. On the first page he says his eyes are blue, and a few lines later admits they’re actually dark grey. It’s funny, and it also means you’re never quite sure how far to trust him!<\/p>\n
The creepiness builds in small, odd moments. A voice downstairs at two in the morning that sounds exactly like his. A patch of grass that burns away in the shape of his body. His mum mentioning karate lessons he’s never had.<\/p>\n
The scariest scene is a prank that goes too far, when two girls hold Ross under the water and he really thinks he’s drowning. He’s also pretty mean to his little brother, Jake, who happens to be the only person in the house who won’t lie. Your reader will probably spot that before Ross does.<\/p>\n
If they like a spooky story with a narrator who needs taking down a peg, this is a lot of fun.<\/p>\n
