Bryony May moved to the seaside town of Brook Dale last summer. Now Red, the little bay she fell in love with, is hers. It’s the Easter holidays and she and her friends are practising every single day for the gymkhana on Saturday.<\/p>\n
Of course there’s a snag. Georgina Brook, who once owned Red and still calls him a flea-bitten nag, has a flashy new palomino and wants revenge.<\/p>\n
Then Finn’s pony bolts towards the old lighthouse on the cliff, where nobody has lived for years. When Bryony catches up, she spots a glow in the cottage window and a shadow moving about inside. Finn is convinced it’s a ghost. Bryony isn’t so sure, and a real mystery is exactly what she’s been longing for.<\/p>\n
It’s a lovely, cosy world to spend time in. There are pasties and picnics, and cheeky ponies (Daffodil swipes hats and Piggy the Shetland only cares about grass). Her best friend Emma is terrified of letting the team down. And Bryony has a secret worry of her own. She’s been making the gymkhana bunting for her busy mum and has managed five wonky flags!<\/p>\n
Worth knowing before you hand it over. Bryony’s dad died the year before, and it’s mentioned gently a few times. The lighthouse has a sad story too, about someone who died long ago rescuing a fishing boat in a storm. Neither is dwelt on, and the ghostly bits are more exciting than frightening.<\/p>\n
Bryony is eleven, and this book follows on from The Pony With No Name, where she first meets Red. That’s the best place to start, because this one tells you straight away how that story turns out.<\/p>\n
