Greyson Mann’s Creepin’ Through the Snow, one of The Creeper Diaries, is a Minecraft diary for 9 year olds about a young creeper who spends everyone else’s present money on himself.

Gerald Creeper Jr has a problem entirely of his own making. His mum handed out emeralds so the children could buy each other gifts for Creeper’s Eve. Gerald walked past a toy shop window, saw a green sled, and spent the lot.

Then it snowed for the first time ever down in the plains, which he takes as proof that he was right all along.

His twin sister Chloe saw him bring it home. She wants an emerald a day to keep quiet. Gerald smashes his piggy bank, pays her off, and now has to earn enough for presents, blackmail and fireworks for himself.

Enter Ziggy Zombie, who lives near a village and therefore knows exactly how humans do Christmas. An old man visits every child in one night. He comes down chimneys, which would surely need a fire resistance potion, given all the lava. He puts apples in socks to make them smell better. And parents actually pay to have their children sit on a fake one’s lap.

That last bit is all Gerald needs to hear.

The comedy comes from Gerald being gloriously, confidently wrong about himself. He is certain he is a natural at business, a brilliant rapper and a generous friend, and the diary keeps quietly showing you otherwise while he explains why he is right. He shoves Sam out of a hiding place during a snowball fight and calls it every mob for himself. He lends Sam the sled and is privately thrilled that this makes it untraceable.

And then it turns. A baby zombie called Zoe tells him Santa does not come to her because she is naughty and does not go to sleep. Gerald crouches down, still trailing twinkly lights, and tells her that is not true. From that point the plan is for her.

One practical note. This assumes your reader knows Minecraft. Emeralds, the Nether, endermen, slimes, blaze powder, snow golems, potions of swiftness. A child who plays will find it funnier than you can possibly imagine. A child who does not will be doing a lot of guessing, and some of the best jokes will sail past.

Same writer, same Overworld, if that turns out to be the draw. Secrets of an Overworked Survivor follows a boy who finally gets a battered pair of Elytra wings mended, then realises he cannot fly off anywhere without a second pair for his friend.
