Karen McCombie’s The Boy Who Stole the Pharaoh’s Lunch is a short, funny time-slip story for 8 year olds about a class clown who lands in Ancient Egypt.<\/p>\n
Seth Davis is good at two things. Gaming and being the class clown. His class topic is Ancient Egypt, and he’s bored stiff by all those names that are impossible to spell.<\/p>\n
So he sneaks into assembly dressed as a mummy and makes all the little ones cry. Oops! While he waits to be told off, he picks up a golden beetle from his teacher’s desk.<\/p>\n
Suddenly he’s standing waist-deep in the Nile beside an enormous water buffalo.<\/p>\n
A girl called Mery and her little brother Pash take him home to their village, along with their pet hyena, Giggler (who giggles, obviously). Seth even gets told off for his own name, because Seth is the god of mischief and the old gods have been banned.<\/p>\n
It’s a brilliant way to meet history. Seth makes pots, weaves baskets, picks dates and plays a spinning game called Star. He brushes his teeth with a twig. The toilet is basically a cat litter tray! There’s a section of real history facts at the end too.<\/p>\n
And then he finds out what the family have been fattening Giggler up for…<\/p>\n
Underneath the jokes there’s something really kind. Seth has never told anyone how hard he finds reading and writing, and you can see why being the class clown feels easier. If you’ve got a reader who acts up when something feels tricky, they might see a bit of themselves in him.<\/p>\n
A little heads-up for animal lovers. Seth is shocked to learn that the family goose was cooked for his dinner. There’s a crocodile scare in the river, and Mery mentions a boy who died after a crocodile bite. It’s all quick and gently told, but a sensitive reader might wince.<\/p>\n
