Stan and Jan Berenstain’s The Berenstain Bears and the Real Easter Eggs is a sweet springtime picture book for 5 year olds about a big Easter egg hunt and a much better surprise.<\/p>\n
It starts back in February. Sister Bear has just counted her valentines (twenty-three!) and decided that holidays are the best, because you get stuff. Mama isn’t so sure. Holidays are about much more than getting things, she says.<\/p>\n
But Sister is already checking the calendar. Easter is coming, which means jellybeans and chocolate bunnies. Yum! And double yum!<\/p>\n
Then there’s a big announcement in the town square. There’s going to be an Easter egg hunt, with prizes in the window of the Beartown General Store. There are more jellybeans than you could ever count, fancy chocolate eggs with sugar roses on, and one chocolate bunny as big as Brother Bear himself.<\/p>\n
Papa is just as excited as the cubs. Then he finds out it’s only for cubs. Poor Papa (he’s crazy about jellybeans, especially the black ones).<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Mama keeps trying to show Sister the first crocuses poking up through the soil and the scratchy forsythia bush that’s about to burst into yellow flowers. Sister isn’t all that interested. Are flowers really going to beat a giant chocolate bunny?<\/p>\n
On the big day, Brother and Sister have a clever plan. Instead of hunting where everyone else is, they head for the woods at the edge of the square. And that’s where Sister goes very quiet. Tucked deep in a bush is a nest with five tiny blue eggs in it.<\/p>\n
Brother and Sister watch, hardly moving, as the eggs crack open one by one and the baby robins struggle out. Their parents fly back and forth with worms for the wide-open beaks. It’s a really gentle, lovely moment, and a perfect one to read slowly together.<\/p>\n
What’s nice is that it never feels like a lecture. The cubs just get so caught up in something wonderful that they forget all about the prizes. It’s a lovely one to share in spring, when you might spot some nests or crocuses of your own.<\/p>\n
It’s short enough for one sitting, and the little family jokes (like who gets the black jellybeans) make it easy to come back to.<\/p>\n
