The summer holidays have started, and the Bears have arrived at the seaside. Small Bear wants to get straight into the water. Papa has other ideas. First, Small Bear needs to learn the rules.<\/p>\n
Rule one is to obey all warning signs. Small Bear spots one straight away. STRONG UNDERTOW, it says. Papa is very pleased with his first rule. Can you guess what happens next?<\/p>\n
And that’s the joke all the way through. There are seven rules in all. Look before you dive. Watch out for rocks when you’re surfing. Watch your step on the sharp shells. Keep a lookout in a boat. Every time, Papa explains the danger very seriously, and every time it’s Papa who comes a cropper.<\/p>\n
Small Bear’s polite little replies tell you exactly how it went. “You proved it, Dad. Even a twig can be bad.” That line gets a giggle every time.<\/p>\n
Little ones LOVE knowing more than the grown-up. The fun is in spotting what’s about to go wrong before Papa does, and watching Small Bear stay perfectly safe while his dad gets into one scrape after another.<\/p>\n
The rhymes are short and bouncy, with lots of repeats, so it’s a lovely one for a child who’s starting to read along. And who can resist a big, pompous voice for Papa?<\/p>\n
There’s some genuinely useful beach sense tucked in there too. Warning signs, undertow, not touching things that might be alive, keeping away from underwater caves. It would make a good chat before a trip to the seaside (without any of Papa’s mishaps, hopefully).<\/p>\n
