John Himmelman’s Tales of Bunjitsu Bunny is a book of tiny martial-arts stories for 6 year olds starring a rabbit who would much rather not fight.<\/p>\n
Isabel is the star of her bunjitsu class. She can kick higher, hit harder and throw her classmates further than anyone. So of course some of them are a bit scared of her.<\/p>\n
But for Isabel, bunjitsu is mostly about finding ways NOT to kick and throw. And that’s the joke running through every story.<\/p>\n
Each one is really short, and each ends with a little twist. The class can’t get through a locked door, so they kick it and punch it and are just about to try a group head butt. Then the door opens. Isabel’s already inside (she used the window).<\/p>\n
There are fox pirates on the pond. There’s a tortoise who always comes last and a boastful Jackrabbit who wants a fight. And there’s a bear who is VERY proud of his bearjitsu.<\/p>\n
Half the fun is guessing how she’ll win this time, because it’s hardly ever by fighting. She lets friends help. She changes direction like a butterfly. Once she makes friends with an angry wave!<\/p>\n
They read like little fables, calm and wise and silly all at once. Who knew a rabbit could be so thoughtful? There’s even a story about nightmares, where her teacher helps her see the monsters differently. That one could be really handy for a child who’s scared of bad dreams.<\/p>\n
Because the stories are so short, they’re perfect for bedtime one at a time, or for a new reader wanting something they can finish on their own. The sentences are simple and there’s lots of repetition to help them along.<\/p>\n
At the very end there’s a bunjitsu promise to read and sign. Never start a fight. Help those who need you. Make someone smile every day. You might find it stuck on a bedroom wall!<\/p>\n
