Jeff Brown’s Stanley’s Christmas Adventure is a silly family adventure for 7 year olds about the Lambchops being summoned to the North Pole to talk Father Christmas out of a strop.<\/p>\n
Two nights before Christmas, Stanley and his brother Arthur hear a bump downstairs and go to investigate. There is a girl by the fireplace in a red jacket trimmed with white fur, rubbing her knee. She has banged it twice. Once in the chimney and once just now.<\/p>\n
Her name is Sarah Christmas and her father has decided to stay at home this year.<\/p>\n
Her reason for coming to this particular house is lovely. Years ago Stanley wrote her father a letter saying he did not need anything, because his mother had already bought him new clothes on account of the flatness, and please be careful driving. That letter is framed on the office wall and it is the one her father likes best.<\/p>\n
There is a snag. Stanley is not flat anymore. Arthur blew him back up with a bicycle pump.<\/p>\n
This sits a good way into the series, so Stanley has already been flat, been posted in an envelope and met a genie, and the book keeps nodding at all of it without making you go and read them first.<\/p>\n
The pleasure of these books is the flat calm with which the Lambchops handle everything. A sleigh and eight reindeer land on the front lawn and the neighbour rings up to compliment Mr Lambchop on his Christmas display. Mrs Lambchop’s main concern is what people will think when the reindeer take off. Mr Lambchop goes and drinks a glass of water to steady himself, then leaves a message on his office answering machine saying he has been called out of town.<\/p>\n
Father Christmas himself is the best joke in the book. He is sulking in a dark study in a zip jacket that says N. Pole Athletic Club, with crumbs in his beard, his slippers on the desk next to a bottle of strawberry soda.<\/p>\n
Nothing here is frightening. One small thing to be aware of is that the book is entirely built on Father Christmas being real and having a house, a wife and a daughter, and Arthur mentions meeting a department store one who was nicer. If your family is at a delicate stage with all that, it is worth a look first.<\/p>\n
If they want to know how the flatness started, the very first Flat Stanley book has the notice board falling on him in the night and Mrs Lambchop saying Heavens.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
