Nancy Krulik’s Princess Pulverizer 7 – Gotta Warn the Unicorns is a knock-about quest story for 7 year olds, starring a princess with absolutely no interest in being one.<\/p>\n
Her father named her Serena. She calls herself Princess Pulverizer and she wants to go to Knight School.<\/p>\n
King Alexander thinks she’s too spoiled and too snobby for that, so he set her a Quest of Kindness. Eight good deeds, eight tokens of gratitude brought home as proof, because she’s also a bit of a fibber.<\/p>\n
This is book seven. She’s done six. Two to go.<\/p>\n
Right now she’s travelling with a dragon called Dribble, a small nervous boy called Lucas and a young unicorn called Fortune, and she’s reading unicorn jokes out loud whether anybody wants them or not.<\/p>\n
Fortune’s herd went missing because of her, which she knows perfectly well, so finding them is the job.<\/p>\n
Then she overhears a king’s chef in a food shop. King Harvey is convinced everyone is trying to poison him. He’s decided the only safe way to drink is from a unicorn’s horn, and his knights already have their orders.<\/p>\n
One of them has spotted an old unicorn. A slow one.<\/p>\n
So now there are two unicorn problems and a girl who has read one book about unicorns cover to cover and considers herself an authority.<\/p>\n
The jokes come thick and fast and are exactly the right sort of terrible. Why didn’t the unicorn join the king’s army? He didn’t like the uni-form. Fortune changes colour to match whatever flowers he’s eating, then sneezes pollen at the dragon, who has hay fever and sets fire to things.<\/p>\n
Princess Pulverizer is very good company because she’s not remotely nice yet. She boasts, she gets distracted, she notices when she’s about to say “I told you so” and only just stops.<\/p>\n
The animal danger is worth a thought if your reader is soft about that sort of thing. A showman had Fortune in a cage before this book began, and a king is currently sending armed men after an old unicorn’s horn. It’s all told lightly and the tone never turns grim, but the threat is clear enough for a seven year old to feel it.<\/p>\n
For a reader who likes a heroine with far too much to say, this lands well, and the chapters come round often enough to stop at the end of one.<\/p>\n
Your reader can pick this up cold, but the quest makes more sense from the start. Grilled Cheese and Dragons opens with Princess Serena swinging from the rafters of the Royal School of Ladylike Manners, which goes about as well as you’d expect.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
