Humphrey Carpenter’s Mr Majeika and the Lost Spell Book is a Halloween adventure for 6 year olds about a wizard teacher who loses his job, and then his magic.<\/p>\n
It’s Halloween, and the head teacher of St Barty’s, Mr Potter, has made a list of rules. No scary masks. No saying “trick or treat”. No frightening old ladies. Class Three are really fed up. So they ask their teacher for a little help. Mr Majeika used to be a wizard, after all.<\/p>\n
His spell turns them into REAL witches, wizards, ghosts and skeletons, with broomsticks to zoom about on for a whole hour. It’s the most exciting night of their lives! But Hamish Bigmore has brought along his “American cousin Lulubelle”, who takes lots and lots of photos.<\/p>\n
Lulubelle turns out to be a newspaper reporter in a blonde wig. The next morning Mr Majeika is all over the front page, and before long he’s been given the sack.<\/p>\n
Worse still, his magic stops working. The only way to get it back is to find the Old Back Door, which leads to the place where all magic comes from. And the wicked witch Wilhelmina Worlock is determined he won’t.<\/p>\n
What follows is a treasure hunt, with each clue leading somewhere grander than the last (the Crown Jewels among them!). A packet of freeze powder stops everyone in their tracks while the children grab the next clue.<\/p>\n
Jody, Thomas and Pete do most of the clever thinking, and young readers will love that. At one point Pete and Thomas dress up as a lady, one on the other’s shoulders, with the bottom half bumping into walls. Poor Mr Majeika ends up moping on a park bench, sacked from every other job he tries. Will his class be able to help him?<\/p>\n
It’s full of silly slapstick too. Hamish gets chased round the classroom by a flying spell book that smacks him on the bottom. There’s one “bum” and a “silly old bat” in there, if you’re counting.<\/p>\n
It isn’t the first Mr Majeika story, and the class remind him of earlier spells along the way. But it works perfectly well on its own.<\/p>\n
If the spooky side is what they love, Mr Majeika and the Ghost Train takes Class Three to a brand-new theme park with haunted rides, just after Hamish gets a secret letter from Wilhelmina.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
