W. Bruce Cameron’s Lily to the Rescue is an animal story for 7 year olds told by a dog who wants every creature she meets to be her friend.<\/p>\n
Lily belongs to Maggie Rose, who’s in third grade. Maggie Rose’s mum is a vet at an animal shelter, and Lily goes there most days. She calls it Work. She plays with the kittens, calms down the nervous dogs and naps with old Brewster, who mostly likes sleeping.<\/p>\n
One day at the dog park, Lily watches a whole gang of crows chase off a hawk. Left behind on the grass is a young crow who can’t fly, with something wrapped tight around one wing.<\/p>\n
Maggie Rose runs for help and tells Lily to guard him. So Lily lies down very still and waits. And then the crow hops up and sits on her back!<\/p>\n
The crow gets a name, Casey, and a little white bandage coat for his wing. He also turns out to be very clever indeed. He can open his own cage door. Who knew a crow and a dog could be such good friends?<\/p>\n
The real joy here is Lily’s voice. She gets things slightly wrong all the time. She’s sure a chipmunk is just a squirrel making silly faces, and she wonders if cats might be a type of squirrel too. She’s never much liked the word no. Children will love knowing more than the narrator does.<\/p>\n
It’s gentle and warm, and there’s some real animal know-how tucked in. Why might a young wild bird not want to leave the people who’ve been feeding him? Maggie Rose’s dad has a theory.<\/p>\n
There’s very little to worry about. A bird gets hurt, there’s a goodbye that makes Maggie Rose sad, and one conversation explains why a group of crows is called a murder. It’s all handled sensibly.<\/p>\n
The chapters are short, so it works as a bedtime book together or for a newer reader to try alone.<\/p>\n
