Tracey West and Adam Beechen’s LEGO Ninjago Quest for the Lost Powers is a ninja adventure for 6 year olds about heroes who’ve lost the very thing that made them heroes.<\/p>\n
Master Wu tells the story himself, over a pot of tea. The ninja lost their Elemental Powers fighting the Overlord. Kai lost Fire, Cole lost Earth, Jay lost Lightning and Zane lost Ice. Now the powers are back and nobody knows how. Wu has four tales to tell you (one for each ninja).<\/p>\n
Kai’s comes first, and he’s not doing well. He’s slurping noodles in a stained hoodie, telling his friend Skylor there’s nothing important left for him to do. Then a gang called the Rotten Rabbits bursts in to rob the noodle shop. Kai gets kicked into a fish tank. Skylor sorts the robbers out in about three moves.<\/p>\n
So when the news mentions a giant fire snake called Fire Fang, Kai’s sure it’s the answer. Fire Fang’s fire came from him. Find the snake, take it back. Simple!<\/p>\n
It isn’t simple, of course. There are Fire Fiends with flaming torches, a booby-trapped crater and a Lake of Fire. And Kai keeps insisting he has to do it ALL on his own, even while Skylor keeps pulling him out of trouble (she even brings her dad’s fireproof oven mitts).<\/p>\n
That’s the heart of Kai’s tale. A big tough hero gets something wrong, then works out that letting people help you isn’t the same as being weak. It’s a lovely thing for a young reader to watch.<\/p>\n
Zane’s tale has a very different feel. He’s a Nindroid, and his friend P.I.X.A.L. plugs him into his own memories to find what’s blocking his power. He watches himself as a boy, snowboarding a monster off a cliff. He also sees his creator’s last moments, which is gentle but a little sad. And he has to face the time he was the cruel Ice Emperor.<\/p>\n
Around all that, the action barely stops. Spinjitzu tornadoes, BAM and CRASH, jokes about noodles and hair. If your reader already knows these ninja, they’ll feel right at home. If they don’t, Wu fills in just enough.<\/p>\n
If they’re after more heroes they probably already know, Tracey West also wrote Mario and the Incredible Rescue. Princess Peach has been snatched by ghosts, and Mario, Luigi and Toad head down a pipe towards Bowser’s Keep to get her back.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
