Jeremy Strong’s Krazy Kow Saves the World is a very silly story for 8 year olds, told by a boy who has invented a cow with a Swiss army udder.<\/p>\n
Jamie is going to be famous. He has decided. He just needs a camera first.<\/p>\n
The school has entered a big environmental competition and the prizes are enormous. A room full of computers for the winning school. A digital video camera and editing kit for whoever comes up with the winning idea. Jamie wants to make actual films, with explosions and cars going off cliffs, so that camera has his name on it.<\/p>\n
Everyone else will write something or do a poster. Jamie decides he is going to make a real film instead, and he goes and stands in his wardrobe in the dark to say it out loud, which is where his brother shuts him in.<\/p>\n
Stuck under a fallen wardrobe in a heap of coat hangers, he has his second idea. Not a person. An animal.<\/p>\n
Krazy Kow has a lumpy head, four stomachs (so four burps at once, all on different notes) and an udder that does flame-thrower, rocket launcher, water cannon, spotlight, vacuum cleaner and a little prongy thing for stones in horses’ hooves. She also does karate. She lives with the Spottiswoods and sleeps under the dining table with her blanket and her teddy.<\/p>\n
She is not real. Jamie made her up and draws her on everything, and his teachers reckon he has cows on the brain.<\/p>\n
What makes this one lovely is how completely you are stuck inside Jamie’s head. He keeps lists (reasons to be cheerful, number one, can’t think of any). He has a running war with Big Bro. He has strong views about football, mainly that everybody assumes boys must like it and he does not, and nobody in his class will ever play anything else at break.<\/p>\n
The jokes are the daft, out-loud kind. Cow prison. Hamster-powered cars. A head with nothing in it but air.<\/p>\n
Then the filming starts and everything that can go wrong does, which is rather the point of the “well, almost” in the title.<\/p>\n
If your reader is the one at the back drawing comics in the margin of their maths book, they will recognise Jamie immediately. And if they have ever been told their idea was stupid by an older sibling, that will land too.<\/p>\n
Cartoon Kid is in the library as well, for another boy with a head full of superheroes. Casper falls off his chair on the first day of term, and by the end of the morning his whole class has invented secret identities.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
