Kitty is a superhero in training. She can see in the dark, hear the tiniest sounds and leap across roofs, and she talks to her cat crew. Her favourite is Pumpkin, the roly-poly ginger kitten who sleeps on her bed.<\/p>\n
Tomorrow is Hallam City’s Festival of Light. Every school is making paper lanterns for the big parade, and the prize for the best one is a golden crown with a gleaming star on top. Kitty has made hers into a cat’s face, with pipe-cleaner whiskers.<\/p>\n
The trouble is, there’ll be fireworks. Pumpkin, Pixie and Figaro all hate the bangs, so for once Kitty’s cat crew won’t be coming.<\/p>\n
Then things start to vanish from the crowd. A man’s brand new watch. A lady’s ruby necklace, which her husband gave her on their wedding day. A handbag. And finally the golden crown, snatched right out of the mayor’s hands!<\/p>\n
Kitty is the only one who’s spotted the sneaky masked figure slipping between the lampposts. So she hands her lantern to her friend Emily, pulls on her cape and mask, and gives chase across the rooftops. All the way up the tallest tower in the city.<\/p>\n
The thief is not quite who you’d expect. (And has VERY good balance.)<\/p>\n
The best thing about this one is watching Kitty be brave all by herself. She wishes her cat friends were there. She feels the moths flutter in her tummy. Then she remembers what her mum told her, that she’s braver than she thinks, and she keeps going anyway.<\/p>\n
It’s a really kind story too. Kitty’s answer to trouble is a clever idea rather than a fight, and she never stops thinking about how the people who lost things must feel.<\/p>\n
It’s short and speedy, with six little chapters, so it’s perfect for a reader who’s just started on chapter books and wants a proper adventure they can finish in one go.<\/p>\n
(Kitty’s mum is Mom here and the bins are trash cans, because this is an American edition.)<\/p>\n
