Junie B. Jones, Boss of Lunch by Barbara Park is a very funny school story for 8 year olds, told start to finish by a girl with enormous opinions and shaky grammar.<\/p>\n
It begins with a lunch box. Junie B. waited ages for it, it finally turned up yesterday, and she cannot stop opening the lid in class to look at the baby birds printed on it.<\/p>\n
Her teacher, Mr Scary, has already asked her not to. When he asks a second time she panics, grabs her napkin and starts polishing his shoes. Then she offers him some spit, because a little spit makes shoes look extra gleamy.<\/p>\n
You get every bit of this in her own words. That is the whole pleasure of these books. She tells you what she is thinking at the exact second she thinks it, including the parts she really ought to keep in.<\/p>\n
May, who sits next to her, is a tattletale, and the two of them are at war. May says bought lunches beat brought lunches, and that mothers are not professional lunch makers, just plain old normal people. Junie B. stamps her foot. Nobody in her whole entire family is normal, thank you very much.<\/p>\n
Which is how she ends up angling for a job in the cafeteria with Mrs Gutzman. A counter to stand behind. A real hair net. Possibly running the entire operation by Thursday.<\/p>\n
A word about the grammar, since it puts some parents off. Junie B. talks the way a small child actually talks. She does a sad sigh. She addresses her classmates as people. The mistakes are deliberate and they are most of the joke. If you have a child who is being corrected a great deal at school, they may find her enormously good company.<\/p>\n
She is not always kind either, and the book never stops to point it out. She says flat out that she does not care for May. There is no lesson bolted onto the end.<\/p>\n
It is American, so it is a cafeteria and a hair net and Room One, which is worth knowing if your reader is the sort to query every word.<\/p>\n
These are short. Big print, lots of space, a chapter you can finish in about two minutes. Ideal for a reader who wants to announce they read a whole book before bed.<\/p>\n
This one sits in her first grade year, so if your reader would rather start where that year starts, Junie B. Jones, First Grader is the book where she walks into a new room with a new teacher and cannot quite read what is on the board.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
