Junie B. Jones Loves Handsome Warren by Barbara Park is a very funny story for 8 year olds about a small girl with her first crush and absolutely no volume control.<\/p>\n
Junie B. is in kindergarten. Her room is called Room Nine and she has two bestest friends, Lucille and Grace.<\/p>\n
Then a boy comes tearing across the playground after Lucille. Junie B. decides he must be an evil stranger boy and shoos him off with a lot of arm waving.<\/p>\n
He is not. He is Warren from Room Eight, he has been in a telly advert, and Lucille saw him first. So she has claimed him.<\/p>\n
Junie B. would quite like a crack at him too. (Ricardo, the boyfriend she already has, gets dropped without ceremony.)<\/p>\n
The introduction does not go well. She goes shy and hides behind her hands. Then she laughs so hard she falls over and rolls around in the grass.<\/p>\n
Warren backs away and calls her a nutball.<\/p>\n
That one word is the whole book. She cannot let it go. She stops talking for the entire rest of the day and she is still thinking about it on the bus home.<\/p>\n
What follows is a five year old’s plan to prove she is a regular normal girl. Fibre cereal instead of the sugary stuff, because Grace reckons sugar gets you jazzied up. Then a shopping list, because Warren liked Lucille’s princess dress and Grace’s lightning shoes.<\/p>\n
You are right inside her head for all of it, and her logic is watertight as long as you are also five.<\/p>\n
Her grammar is hers and it is wrong on purpose. She runned and she springed, Lucille is beautifuller than her, and anything she does not fancy discussing is her own personal beeswax. If your reader has only just got confident with spelling, it is worth saying out loud that this is a joke rather than a mistake.<\/p>\n
She is very funny about grown ups too. When her parents catch her hiding under the sink they do not, in her opinion, handle theirselves that professional.<\/p>\n
If you’ve got a child who says the thing everyone else is only thinking, and says it at full volume, they will recognise her instantly.<\/p>\n
If this one goes down well there is a whole shelf of her, and Junie B. Jones and the Mushy Gushy Valentine is a good next one. A big mushy card turns up from a secret admirer and she is absolutely determined to work out who sent it, with Lucille showing off about her nanna’s caterer the entire time.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
