Judy Moody Was in a Mood by Megan McDonald is a school story for 7 year olds about a girl who has decided, well in advance, that this school year is going to be terrible.<\/p>\n
Summer is over and she is not having it. She doesn’t want to brush her hair. She doesn’t want to learn spellings. She very much doesn’t want to sit near Frank Pearl, who eats paste.<\/p>\n
Worse, everyone else has come back from the holidays in T-shirts with exciting places printed on them, and she hasn’t got a single top with any words on it.<\/p>\n
Then Dad mentions, in passing, that the fish they bought at the market that time was shark.<\/p>\n
Up she goes. Marker out. One big-mouthed shark with a great many teeth on a plain T-shirt, and I ATE A SHARK across it in capitals. Then out of the door without waiting for anyone.<\/p>\n
That is the shape of her. Thunderous one minute, off like a rocket the next because something brilliant has occurred to her.<\/p>\n
At school she greets Mr Todd as Mr Toad and cracks herself up. Asked to find five spelling words hidden on the board, she writes NO five times. Sent up to add some more she offers RAT, GNAT, TIGER and SPIT, then a sentence in which the tiger spits on the rat and the gnat. The class goes to pieces.<\/p>\n
She’s such good company because she genuinely wants things. She wants the little three-legged plastic table out of the middle of the pizza box, quite badly, and when Rocky gets picked to fetch the pizza instead she says Luck-y in a tone you will recognise immediately.<\/p>\n
Her collections are the best running gag. Twenty-seven dead moths. A handful of old scabs. A box of doll parts including three Barbie heads.<\/p>\n
Then there are the small private things between best friends. The manhole exactly halfway between her front door and Rocky’s, measured over the summer with a very long ball of string. The two speed bumps on the way to the shop, which are China and Japan.<\/p>\n
One practical thing. It’s American and it shows. Judy is in third grade rather than Year 3, she has a Mom rather than a Mum, and the spelling on the page is American throughout. Nothing here is difficult, but be ready to explain the school years.<\/p>\n
If you’ve got a reader who can be outraged and hilarious in the same breath, Judy will feel like somebody they already know.<\/p>\n
Her little brother Stink spends this book being squashed, and he gets books of his own. Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker opens with him in a sweet shop holding a five dollar gift certificate, with Judy at his elbow working very hard on talking him into buying her something.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
