Judy Moody Gets Famous by Megan McDonald is for 7 year olds who know exactly how it feels when somebody else gets the thing they wanted.<\/p>\n
Jessica Finch turns up at school wearing a tiara. She won the spelling bee. Her photo is in the paper under a headline, and her dad says she’s had her fifteen minutes of fame.<\/p>\n
Judy is not jealous, obviously. She just happens to think the tiara looks be-dumb.<\/p>\n
Her plan is to become a better speller than Jessica. She gets three words into the dictionary, reaches aardwolf, and decides that an aardwolf is a silly old termite-eater with beady eyes that looks exactly like Jessica Finch.<\/p>\n
Then she tries spelling the vegetables in the fridge instead and gives up at asparagus.<\/p>\n
Dinner turns into a spelling match, which is where this gets really funny. Judy asks how to spell spaghetti and gets three different answers from three different people.<\/p>\n
She also loses an argument about I before E to her little brother, and takes it very badly indeed. Rules are supposed to be rules. Nobody warned her about exceptions.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile Stink has spelled out MOODY HALL OF FAME on the fridge in letter magnets and filled it with his own report card and photos.<\/p>\n
Judy goes upstairs to find something of hers worth hanging up. What she has is a shoebox that smells of old rubber, a baby tooth, a lock of hair, a macaroni portrait of herself with a screaming mouth, and one photograph of her face down on a driveway having a tantrum.<\/p>\n
If your reader keeps a drawer of treasure that nobody else would call treasure, they will know this feeling inside out.<\/p>\n
Then she goes round the family asking who has been famous, and every single one of them has something. Even her friend Rocky got his picture in the library. Stink was born in the back of the Jeep and ended up on the news.<\/p>\n
That’s the setup. Judy wants her own fifteen minutes, and she is going to go and get them.<\/p>\n
The best thing about her is that she says all of it out loud. The jealousy, the sulking, the plotting. Nothing gets tidied up to make her likeable.<\/p>\n
Two small things. It’s American, so it’s Mom, and a spelling bee with a tiara may need explaining to a child who’s never seen one.<\/p>\n
Stink has books of his own, by the way. Stink and the Incredible Super-Galactic Jawbreaker opens in a sweet shop, where he has a gift certificate, his eye on a jawbreaker the size of a planet, and Judy at his elbow demanding he buy her gummy brains.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
