Heidi Heckelbeck 4 – Heidi Heckelbeck in Disguise by Wanda Coven is a short chapter book for 6 year olds about a real witch who has had quite enough of Halloween.<\/p>\n
Heidi likes the decorations. She likes carving pumpkins. She very much likes sweets.<\/p>\n
What she can’t stand is other children dressing up as witches. The warts, the crooked noses, the broomsticks. None of it is what being a witch is actually like, and Heidi would know, because she is one and nobody at school has the faintest idea.<\/p>\n
So she announces she’s skipping Halloween.<\/p>\n
Her little brother Henry spots the flaw in that plan immediately. No Halloween, no free sweets. Heidi asks whether he might share his. He informs her that pirates do not share their booty.<\/p>\n
Then a girl in her class called Melanie announces she’s going as a witch, the ugliest and most crooked-nosed witch she can manage, and that nobody else is allowed to copy her.<\/p>\n
Heidi is furious and can’t say a single word about why. That’s the lovely bit. She’s holding the biggest secret in the room and the one person she’d most like to put right is the one person she can’t.<\/p>\n
Halloween is back on. And now she needs a costume by tomorrow.<\/p>\n
The costume shop is a proper treat. Everything in her size is wrong. Dorothy is out because Melanie played Dorothy in the class play. Her old apple tree outfit is very much out. What’s left is a clown suit with a rainbow wig, gigantic floppy shoes and a big red nose.<\/p>\n
The size of this suits a newer reader nicely. Short chapters, lots of talking, something daft happening on most pages.<\/p>\n
Here’s the thing to think about. Melanie is horrible to Heidi and the story doesn’t soften it. She calls her a weirdo in front of the class, and a nut, and keeps going when Heidi goes bright red and can’t get her words out.<\/p>\n
If your child is dealing with someone like that at school right now, that may land a bit close. The good news is Heidi has Lucy, who jumps in on her side straight away and gives as good as she gets. That’s a decent thing for a small reader to watch happen.<\/p>\n
If Heidi wins your reader over, Heidi Heckelbeck 5 – Heidi Heckelbeck Gets Glasses comes next. Same class, same Melanie, except this time it’s Lucy who turns up with something new and gets all the attention for it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
