Alice Hemming’s George and the New Craze is a short, warm story for 5 year olds about a giraffe, a pile of collecting cards and learning to share.

The wildlife park has a new craze. Everyone’s collecting People Cards (pictures of people, which is a lovely twist when you’re an animal).

The penguins have the whole set. George has three, although two of them are the same. His friend Sid has just one, but it’s a rare one.

What are they for? Nobody’s sure. They try building a tower and playing Snap. Neither works. The album has gaps everywhere. They need more cards!

So George goes hunting, and he doesn’t hunt alone for long. Toni joins in, then Mo and Max, Gus and Minnie, and soon there are enough for a proper tower.

But there’s still one gap in the book. And only Sid can fill it. Will he give up his precious rare card?

Most of us have lived through a playground craze (football stickers, anyone?), so you’ll recognise this straight away. And the very end has a funny twist about the penguins.

For more from the same author, Bibble and the Bubbles is another gentle friendship story, about a boy on Earth and an alien who flies in on a spaceship made of bubbles.
