Enid Blyton’s Five on Kirrin Island Again is a mystery for 9 year olds about a girl whose father moves onto her island without asking.<\/p>\n
George owns Kirrin Island. Her mother gave it to her and she is FIERCE about it. Nobody lands there without her say so.<\/p>\n
Then a letter arrives at school. Her father wants to live on the island for a while to finish an important experiment, and he needs to put up a tower to do it.<\/p>\n
He hasn’t asked. He has simply decided. George is furious.<\/p>\n
Her verdict on grown-ups is that they give you things “and then act as though the things were theirs all the time”. Her cousin Anne points out that Uncle Quentin is a famous scientist who needs peace and quiet. George is not remotely convinced.<\/p>\n
So the Five come home to Kirrin, and the first thing they spot from the road is a tall thin tower like a lighthouse rising out of the ruined castle, with a glass room glittering at the top.<\/p>\n
Uncle Quentin is over there on his own. Nobody knows what he’s working on. Aunt Fanny only knows that the last bit of it has to happen with water all around, and that he’s been messing about with explosives.<\/p>\n
Then a stranger turns up and starts keeping a very close eye on him.<\/p>\n
The pleasure of it is how comfortable and old-fashioned it all is before the trouble starts. Buns and ginger-beer at the station. Trunks piled in the hall. Hot scones and a tea that looks like a spread for twenty. Timmy the dog smuggled into a school dormitory and hiding under the bed.<\/p>\n
This one comes well into the series, so the cousins already know the island and have been down its dungeons before. Your reader can start here without any trouble at all. It just means the island arrives feeling like a place they have history with.<\/p>\n
One thing to flag. It’s a properly old book and it shows. There are galoshes and half-crowns and a pony trap. More noticeably, George keeps wishing she were a boy, and the nicest thing Julian can find to say when she behaves well is that she’s “more like a boy than ever”. Anne does push back once, pointing out that it isn’t only boys who can give in decently, but mostly it just sits there. Some children won’t notice. Others will have opinions, and it’s worth being ready for the conversation rather than surprised by it.<\/p>\n
If your reader wants to know where all this began, Five on a Treasure Island is the holiday where the cousins first meet George, first row out to the island and end up in the dungeons hunting a wreck full of gold.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
