Margaret McNamara’s Christmas Fairy Magic is a cosy Fairy Bell Sisters story for 6 year olds about five fairy sisters waiting for Tinker Bell to come home for Christmas.

Yes, THAT Tinker Bell. Clara, Rosy, Goldie, Sylva and baby Squeak are her little sisters. They live on Sheepskerry Island, while Tink lives in Neverland with Peter Pan.

Ten days before Christmas, a magic message arrives in a shower of sparkling crystals. Tink is coming home! She’ll bring the tree, the decorations and every single present. The sisters just have to promise not to lift a finger.

Which is much harder than it sounds. All the other fairies pick their Christmas trees while the Bell sisters watch. At the Christmas Fair they find they’ve each got three stones to spend instead of twelve. Sylva gets so excited she invites a crowd of fairies to a surprise party for Tink. And Tink still hasn’t turned up.

Will she come? Your reader will be hoping just as hard as Sylva is.

It’s the sisters who make it. Goldie is dramatic and adores fashion (she’d quite like the Christmas tree skirt as an actual skirt). Sylva is the little one who gets carried away. Clara worries about everyone. Rosy looks after baby Squeak, who talks in her own words that mostly only Rosy understands.

They squabble just like real sisters. By Christmas Eve they’re tired and cross and taking it out on each other. But when anyone else makes them feel bad, they stick together.

The presents are a highlight, too. With only three stones each, they have to be clever, and some of what they make is more thoughtful than anything they could have bought. It’s a sweet message about what Christmas is for, without being preachy.

The storyteller chats to your child as they go, and even checks whether they want to turn the page, which makes it a nice one to read aloud.

This is the sixth Fairy Bell Sisters book, and it helps to have met the sisters first. Sylva and the Fairy Ball is where it all begins, with Sylva desperate to go to a ball she’s too young for.
