Victoria Schwab’s Second Chances is an Everyday Angel story for 8 year olds about a girl whose best friend has turned the whole school against her.

Caroline sits on her own at Table 12. Three weeks into the new school year, Lily Pierce has told everyone to keep away from her. Lily lives next door. Two summers ago they swapped matching half-moon necklaces and promised to stick together no matter what.

Now a tray of ketchup and mustard has just gone down the back of Caroline’s uniform. It’s the fourth one ruined since term started (and she keeps telling her mum it was an accident).

Then Aria turns up. She looks like an ordinary twelve-year-old with wavy red hair, but she’s actually an angel, sent to help girls in trouble so she can get her wings. She can turn invisible, change her shoelaces purple with a thought and fix a broken locker with one touch. Real school rules completely baffle her, though. (What IS a detention?)

Aria is looking for a girl wrapped in blue smoke that only she can see. She finds Caroline straight away. Then Lily walks into art class, and she’s wrapped in blue smoke too.

That’s what makes this more than a bullying story. How do you help the girl being picked on AND the girl doing the picking? Once Caroline finally tells Aria how the falling-out began, you’ll probably see Lily a bit differently as well.

It’s gentle and hopeful, and Aria is lovely company. She only found out what ketchup was a few days ago, and she thinks autumn might be her new favourite season.

The bullying is real and it keeps going, so this is worth knowing about. Uniforms go in the toilet. Someone scrawls Caroline Mason is a waste of space on a bathroom wall. Girls call her names on a drawing. Caroline hasn’t told a single adult, and some days she thinks about running away.

If your child is going through friendship trouble right now, it could land very close to home. It might be exactly what helps, or it might be one to read together. For a reader who has watched friendships shift at school, Caroline’s side of it will feel very true.

The girls are twelve and in seventh grade, a little older than your reader, but it’s written simply.

If you’d like to meet Aria from the start, go back to New Beginnings. Her first girl is Gabby, starting at a new school while her big brother is very ill in hospital, so it’s a tender one.
