Holly Webb’s Earth Friends Fair Fashion is a warm school and friendship story for 7 year olds about a girl who just wants to be ordinary.<\/p>\n
Maya has a secret. Her mum is India Kell, a famous singer and TV presenter. At her old school everyone knew, and everyone was nice to her because of it. So Maya begged to move to Park Road School, where she’s plain Maya Knight and hardly anyone reads celebrity magazines.<\/p>\n
This is the first Earth Friends book, and it opens with Maya sneaking into class late. She’s told her friends Poppy and Emily she was at the doctor’s. Really she was at a magazine photoshoot in false eyelashes (which she hated).<\/p>\n
Then their teacher, Mr Finlay, sets a new project on Fairtrade. Everyone else picks chocolate. Maya, who cares a LOT about animals, recycling and the planet, spots a new clothes shop from the school bus with a Fairtrade sign in the window. Could clothes be Fairtrade too?<\/p>\n
There’s another problem. Quiet Izzy has no group, and Maya asks her to join theirs before she can stop herself. Emily is not pleased.<\/p>\n
It’s a very easy book to get lost in. Maya’s worries sound exactly like a real ten or eleven year old’s. She hates lying to her friends. She loves her mum but can’t stand the fuss. She feels guilty when Emily is cross with her. And her friends are great fun, especially Poppy with her homemade dandelion tea and her theory that their teacher has a map tattooed on his back.<\/p>\n
The Fairtrade side is done really well too. Mr Finlay shows the class photos of children harvesting cocoa, and the girls start asking real questions about where their stuff comes from. It never feels like a lecture, because it comes from what the girls care about.<\/p>\n
Will Maya’s secret stay secret? And can four very different girls actually work together?<\/p>\n
If you’ve got a reader who likes stories about friendship and fairness, and maybe has strong opinions about the planet already, this is a lovely fit. It’s in Year Six, so it’s also good for anyone about to face the ups and downs of their last year of primary.<\/p>\n
