Dream Big, Little Pig by Kristi Yamaguchi is a picture book for 5 year olds about a pig looking for something she really loves to do.

Poppy would love to be famous. She tries dancing, singing and modelling, but none of them goes very well. Being told to try something else gets rather tiring when you’ve already tried quite a lot.

Her family and her best friend Emma keep cheering her on. They love her whether she gets picked or not. When Poppy starts wondering what to do next, those are the people she wants around her.

Then a day out with Emma takes them past an ice rink. Poppy stops to watch the skaters. This is something she would really like to try.

If your reader enjoys a character with big ideas, Poppy has plenty. She doesn’t just want a small part in the fun. She imagines herself right in the middle of it, even when the people in charge aren’t convinced.

The telling has lots of repetition, with her supporters coming back to cheer after each disappointment. It’s a nice rhythm for reading aloud. Your child may start recognising who’s going to speak next before you get there.

There’s something reassuring about the way Poppy’s family stays on her side. Their encouragement doesn’t disappear when she trips or sings out of tune. She has people to spend time with even when her plans haven’t worked.

The skating doesn’t suddenly become easy either. Poppy slips and falls as she tries it out. The difference is how much she wants to get back up and carry on.

For a child who likes stories about trying something new, that gives them a little pig to cheer for. You can enjoy her enthusiasm without needing every attempt to be a success straight away. The friendship is as much a part of the fun as the big dream.

Isadora Moon Has a Sleepover is also in the library if they’d like another story about excitement mixed with nerves. Isadora is staying at Zoe’s house for the first time and the friends have very big plans for a baking competition.
