Connor meets his dragon on a freezing rooftop, peering through a telescope at the planet Talis. A green and purple face appears at the other end of the lens. It’s Lightspirit, and the first thing she wants to discuss is whether that little dot is a moon.<\/p>\n
Eight months later Connor is a dragonseer, training in secret at the Guild Hall with the other children who have found dragons. The grown-ups are worried. Someone is gathering power, and there’s talk of the Dragon Storm, the war that drove the dragons out of the world a thousand years ago.<\/p>\n
Then grumpy Mr Creedy writes a puzzle on the board. Connor cracks it (with more help from his friends than he likes to admit). Suddenly Creedy is taking him into his confidence, handing him a notebook written in code and sneaking him into the royal palace at night.<\/p>\n
What makes this one stand out is Connor himself. He’s brilliant, and he knows it. He wants to be the one who solves it, so he stops sharing with his friends and starts keeping secrets from Lady Berin. Your reader will probably see the trouble coming long before he does!<\/p>\n
Lightspirit is the heart of it. She’s curious about everything (“Fascinating!”) and she’s really, really bad at lying. Every time Connor asks her to keep quiet she flaps her little wings in misery. Cara, the quiet girl who used to live on the streets, isn’t fooled for a second either.<\/p>\n
There are plenty of puzzles along the way, with a code in three languages and star signs hidden in the pages. If you’ve got a reader who loves working things out, they’ll want to crack it alongside him.<\/p>\n
It isn’t the first Dragon Storm book, and the other children’s earlier adventures get mentioned now and then. It still works on its own, because Connor’s story starts from the night he meets his dragon. Things get properly tense later on, with soldiers and a very angry dragon, so it suits a reader who likes a bit of danger.<\/p>\n
