Batgirl has been named Hero of the Month and there’s a party in her dorm room, which she’s turned into a high-tech bunker.<\/p>\n
Katana has gone to fetch the cake. Katana is never late for anything. An hour goes by and she still isn’t back.<\/p>\n
So the party turns into a search, and that’s where it gets good. Half the school piles in to help and every one of them is useless in their own particular way.<\/p>\n
Supergirl trips over her own shoelaces. Big Barda swings her Mega Rod around and everyone has to duck. Miss Martian can read minds but turns invisible when people look at her, which is most of the time.<\/p>\n
What actually happened to Katana is that she walked past a small brown door near the dining hall. It has a sign on it in the caretaker’s handwriting. Keep out. Or else. That means you. I am serious.<\/p>\n
Something whispered her name and she went in.<\/p>\n
Down under the school there are tunnels, and at the end of them a heavy metal door crusted with barnacles and bolted with a dozen locks. Katana picks every one of them with the lacquered stick out of her hair.<\/p>\n
Then a wall of black water comes down the tunnel at her, full of something silver and sharp.<\/p>\n
They turn out to be swords. A hundred of them, carved teak and gold, every one different, and a conch shell balanced on the blade of one of them with a message meant for her.<\/p>\n
It’s a good mystery for a reader who likes a puzzle inside their superhero story, because nobody knows what the swords are for, including Katana.<\/p>\n
She’s a nice change from the loud ones, too. She’s the organised friend, the one who’s good at wrapping things and remembers what time to be somewhere, and she can still deflect an icicle with her sword and drop the bits neatly into people’s lemonade.<\/p>\n
One gentle thing to know. Katana’s grandmother is dead, and missing her runs all the way through. A nightmare about her disappearing wakes Katana in the night, and the swords stir it all up again. It’s sad rather than frightening, and it’s on the page from early on rather than sprung on you.<\/p>\n
