Kes Gray’s Daisy and the Trouble with Maggots is a very funny story for 5 year olds about a fishing trip, a catapult, and something that was absolutely definitely not Daisy’s fault.<\/p>\n
Daisy tells you on the first page that something happened yesterday. She does not tell you what.<\/p>\n
She tells you it happened because maggots are too wriggly. And tiggly. And because the sun was in her eyes. And because it was windy.<\/p>\n
Well. Sort of windy.<\/p>\n
OK, not that windy.<\/p>\n
Alright, not very windy at all.<\/p>\n
Uncle Clive has bought a new fishing rod and is busting to try it out, so Daisy is going fishing with him on Sunday. Mum and Auntie Sue are coming for the picnic half, on account of neither of them fancying the maggots.<\/p>\n
First there’s a whole week of school to get through, and that’s where the trouble actually starts. Jack Beechwhistle overhears Daisy telling Gabby about the trip. Jack Beechwhistle knows everything about rivers. He does canoeing lessons, which makes him an expert. He has canoed past boats, which makes him a double expert. He has canoed past people fishing, which makes him a TRIPLE DIPPLE expert.<\/p>\n
So Daisy calls him a Poopy Face.<\/p>\n
Then Mum says she has to apologise, which makes her crosser than she already was. Cross getting dressed. Cross at breakfast. Cross cleaning her teeth. Cross the whole way to school.<\/p>\n
That’s what reading it feels like. It all comes in Daisy’s voice, in short lines with lots of capitals, and the fun of it is that she’s absolutely certain she’s in the right while you can see perfectly well that she isn’t.<\/p>\n
There are very few words on each page, so a child who has only just started on chapter books can finish this by themselves. That does wonders for what they think of their own reading.<\/p>\n
One more thing. Jack and Harry spend that week telling her whoppers about fish with teeth that can bite through fruit cake, and a canoe getting eaten by a shark at the lock. Nobody in the book ever says out loud that this is nonsense. Your reader is left to spot it, and most will, and they’ll enjoy spotting it.<\/p>\n
For another child who is quite sure the entire world is being unreasonable, Horrid Henry and the Zombie Vampire is here.
