The FAMILY MEETING sign is up on the fridge, and Clementine is having what she calls a nervous breakdown. In her experience, family meetings are always about something she’s done wrong. So she spends the whole day being extra good, just in case. She hangs up her wet mittens. She’s polite about the almonds. She’s patient with her little brother.<\/p>\n
It’s a lot of worry for one girl, especially as her week is already going wrong. Eighteen, the class rat she and Waylon are training for the science fair, has chewed his way out of his cage. And her best friend Margaret has come back from Hollywood wearing lipstick (at ten years old!).<\/p>\n
The meeting turns out to be about something else altogether. There’s going to be a new baby. Clementine’s answer is a very loud “No thanks!” She has lots of good reasons too, because hot dogs come in packs of eight and the kitchen table has four sides.<\/p>\n
Reading it is like sitting right inside Clementine’s head. Her thoughts race off in every direction and she’s always noticing things nobody else does. She says she has lots of sections, like her fruit name. Some are worried and some are cross, and some are just desperate to try on Dad’s new tool belt.<\/p>\n
It’s also very funny. Her little brother gets a different vegetable name every time she mentions him (Spinach, Parsnip, Lima Bean…). Her dad insists his tool belt from the hardware shop is a priceless family heirloom.<\/p>\n
Underneath the jokes it’s a gentle look at change. Clementine’s dad reminds her that most change is part good and part bad. And when she reads her brother his bedtime story, she suddenly sees he’s not a baby any more.<\/p>\n
If a new brother or sister is on the way in your house, this could be a lovely one to share. If not, it’s still a great read for anyone who likes a funny, chatty heroine with LOTS of opinions.<\/p>\n
