Artemis Fowl and the Lost Colony by Eoin Colfer is a fast, time-bending caper for 10 year olds, and it sits well into the series.<\/p>\n
Artemis is fourteen now and has dragged Butler to four countries in four months without explaining why. Edinburgh. Death Valley. Uzbekistan. Now a pavement in Barcelona, in the afternoon sun, for over an hour.<\/p>\n
Butler circles him the whole time, working out which rooftop a sniper would choose. Artemis tells him which one, and why, in order. This is the two of them at their best and the book knows it.<\/p>\n
Then something steps out of thin air onto the road. Grey-green, scaled, five feet tall, with horned ears and golden eyes and a smell of sulphur. It takes Artemis by the hand and greets him in extremely old-fashioned English.<\/p>\n
And then they are both gone, through a tear in time, past an ocean and a field of ice and a red dusty landscape, and out onto a building site in Barcelona a hundred years earlier, where Gaudi is standing with his drawings.<\/p>\n
Artemis, naturally, stops to give him notes on the roof.<\/p>\n
Butler hauls him back by brute force, and Artemis returns with his index finger and his middle finger swapped over. He is thrilled about it.<\/p>\n
It rattles along, and it is very pleased with itself in a good way. The jokes sit in the gaps between the plot. Artemis has just worked out that he cannot stop looking at girls, and is treating this as a fault in his own system that he ought to be able to engineer away.<\/p>\n
The demons drive the story. A whole tribe of them were pulled out of time by a spell long ago, the spell is coming apart, and there is a second child genius in play who wants one for study. That last part puts Artemis somewhere he is not used to, which is second cleverest in the room.<\/p>\n
Two things a parent might want to weigh. This is a late book in the series and it assumes you already know Holly, Mulch and Foaly and roughly what Artemis has done to the fairy People before now. A child starting here will follow the plot and miss the point of half the jokes.<\/p>\n
And the danger is real rather than cartoon. People get hurt, the demons want humans gone from the planet, and there is a good deal of weaponry about.<\/p>\n
If your reader has landed here out of order, the one immediately before it is Artemis Fowl and The Opal Deception. A pixie with a long memory comes back for everybody who has ever annoyed her, working from a very literal list.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
