Daisy Meadows’ Cherry the Cake Fairy is a birthday-party fairy adventure for 5 year olds, with a goblin stomping about in the icing.

It’s Kirsty’s birthday and Rachel is staying for the whole week. Then one more card drops through the door. It’s gold and sparkly, it has a red wax seal, and it’s addressed to BOTH girls.

Open it and out comes a rainbow, with Bertram the frog footman surfing on top of it. (Who wouldn’t want their post delivered like that?) He’s brought an invitation. The fairy king and queen have ruled Fairyland for 1000 years, there’s a surprise party being planned, and Rachel and Kirsty are to be special guests.

This is the first of the Party Fairies books, so it sets everything up. Bertram shows the girls all seven fairies busy in the Party Workshop, getting the cake, music, decorations and outfits ready.

Then it’s back to Kirsty’s own party. In the middle of Musical Statues some red and purple glitter floats under Rachel’s nose and she sneezes three times (so they’re both out). It’s Cherry, and she needs help fast.

One of Jack Frost’s goblins has been ruining birthday cakes all over the place. He pulls out the candles and stamps in the icing. And by the time the girls get to the kitchen, Kirsty’s cake has had the goblin treatment too.

Worse still, the goblin snatches Cherry’s party bag of magic dust and runs off with it. That’s when you find out what Jack Frost is really up to.

There’s some lovely slapstick for little ones here. Kirsty’s kitten, Pearl, hisses and the goblin locks himself in a kitchen cupboard! Kirsty’s plan to get him out is a very sticky one, and it’s a nice bit of clever thinking from her.

The grown-ups are funny too. Watch out for Kirsty’s dad when everyone admires a cake he definitely didn’t make.

It’s super gentle. The goblin is grumpy and threatens to bite, but he’s more silly than scary. The worst thing that happens to anyone is a ruined cake.

Cherry’s own problem is sorted by the end, but the goblin warns there are more party bags to steal. So the girls finish the day promising to keep watch, and you can tell the adventure carries on into the next book.

The copy in the library is the American edition, so Kirsty calls her mum “Mom” and the girls are off school for “spring break”. Little readers probably won’t mind a bit.

If this one goes down well, Melodie the Music Fairy comes next. Kirsty is dancing in a ballet show at the village hall, and the music starts going faster and faster.
