Ann M. Martin’s Kristy and the Snobs is a friendship story for 9 year olds about a girl with a VERY big mouth and a street full of stuck-up neighbours.

Kristy Thomas has moved across Stoneybrook to a huge house in the poshest part of town. Her friends from the Baby-Sitters Club all live back where she used to. And the girls on her new street wear private-school uniforms, make-up and stockings.

Kristy can’t stand snobs. They’re right up there on her list with cabbage and squirrels.

So it doesn’t go well. At the bus stop one of them makes a crack about her outfit (jeans with a hole in the knee, of all days). Kristy calls them snob clones. Shannon Kilbourne calls her jerk-face right back.

Then it gets worse. While Kristy’s babysitting for the family next door to Shannon, the phone rings with news that the house is on fire. Kristy gets all three children outside before she notices there’s no smoke at all. It was a hoax!

Her revenge is brilliant, and very naughty. She orders two weeks of nappy deliveries in Shannon’s name. The next morning a man dressed as a stork turns up across the road, with bells playing Rock-a-Bye Baby. Who wouldn’t giggle at that?

Kristy tells it herself and she’s very honest about her temper. She admits she has a big mouth and she’s not afraid to use it. There’s also a pair of super spoilt children to babysit, who send her back to the kitchen three times over the ice in their Cokes.

A gentle heads-up about Louie, though. The family’s old collie is limping and walking into things, and the vet says he has arthritis and poor eyesight. He’s in pain and he isn’t going to get better. Kristy’s little brother David Michael doesn’t understand how poorly Louie is, and that’s quite sad to read.

If your child has an elderly pet at home, that part could feel very close. For a reader who loves animals, it’s also a tender picture of a family looking after a dog they adore.

It’s American and a bit dated in places (Claudia is described as “exotic”, which is worth a chat). This is the eleventh Baby-Sitters Club book and it catches up on earlier ones as it goes, so the place to start is Kristy’s Great Idea.

If they enjoy a feud fought with pranks, try The Tapper Twins Go to War. Claudia Tapper gets laughed at in front of the whole sixth grade by her own twin brother, and her answer involves a dead fish hidden in his rucksack.
