Laura Ellen Anderson’s Amelia Fang and the Memory Thief is a silly, slimy adventure for 7 year olds about a little vampire whose best friends suddenly can’t remember who she is.

Amelia’s week starts badly. She’d rather read her pumpkin magazine than practise the organ, and her mum isn’t having it. Then her pet pumpkin Squashy sits in a blob of goblin-slime superglue and sticks to her dress. (The dress doesn’t survive.)

School is more fun. There’s a new cookery teacher called Mr Sublime, who has filled the classroom with pictures of himself posing with a frying pan. Florence the yeti calls him MR SLIME every chance she gets.

Mr Sublime sets a competition. Whichever team sells the most Sublime Cookies in a week wins a trip to Pumpkin Paradise Park, and Amelia wants that trip more than anything. Her team’s flavours include Sweat Syrup Surprise and Belly-Button Fluff. Would you buy a box? The one to beat is Frankie, who gives away unicorn stickers with hers.

Then things turn strange. Florence has never heard of any competition. Amelia turns up to her own birthnight party and finds no decorations, no friends and no Mum or Dad. Grimaldi, one of her very best friends, politely asks her to remind him of her name.

Only Amelia and Prince Tangine still seem like themselves. She’s got a sore fang and he’s been too sick to eat a thing. (Your reader will probably spot the clue before they do.)

It’s very funny, even while everything is going wrong. Tangine’s dad sits on his own doorstep waiting to meet the king, which is awkward because he IS the king. And Florence shouts every line in capitals.

There’s a wobbly stretch that’s worth knowing about. Amelia waits for hours at the party and starts to think her friends have gone off her. When Grimaldi doesn’t recognise her she’s properly frightened, and then Squashy bounces away into the night. If you’ve got a child who worries about being left out, that part might sting. If they love a puzzle, they’ll be too busy working it out.

This is the third Amelia Fang book. Early on Tangine sings the whole story so far to his class, which is brilliant but gives away how the first two turn out. If your reader likes to go in order, start with Amelia Fang and the Barbaric Ball. (It’s the American edition here, so Mum is Mom.)

Amelia Fang and the Half-Moon Holiday comes next. It’s Amelia’s very first camping trip, with badges to earn and Frankie, her cookie rival, determined to win those too.
